There are numerous butterflies and moths living in Yarnell, Arizona. Their numbers and varieties vary according to the seasons of the year.

We will try to show you some of the butterflies and moths in the Yarnell area on this page.

Yarnell is located on the Highway 89, Scenic Route to Prescott, Arizona. Yarnell is also listed as one of the communities to visit along the American Heritage Trail route. There is a link to the Yarnell Chamber Of Commerce at the bottom of this page.

Most of the images are taken from within Miller Creek; just North of The Shrine Of Saint Joseph, within 1 mile of downtown Yarnell, Arizona. This is clearly one of the best places in Arizona to see butterflies. This is a beautiful, quiet, peaceful area, and that is one of the best kept secrets in Arizona.

BUTTERFLY AND MOTH CHARACTORISTICS:

Pipevine Swallowtail, Battus philenor.
The upper surface of the hindwing is iridescent blue or blue - green. The underside of the hindwing has a submarginal row of 7 round orange spots within an iridescent blue field. Wing span: 2 3/4 - 5 inches.

Two-tailed Swallowtail, Papilio multicaudata.
The upper surface of the male forewing has narrow black stripes. Each hindwing has 2 tails. Wing span: 3 1/2 - 5 inches.

White - Lined Sphinx Moth, Hyles lineata.
The upperside of the forewing is dark olive brown in color with paler brown color along the costa and outer margin, a narrow tan band can be seen running from the wing tip to the base, and white streaks are found along the veins. The hindwing upperside is black with a reddish pink median band. Wing span: 2 7/16 - 3 9/16 inches.

Queen Butterfly, Danaus gilippus.
The upperside is chestnut brown in color; the black borders of the forewings have 2 rows of white spots also there are white spots scattered on the forewing apex. The underside of each hindwing has black veins. The black borders on both wings have 2 rows of white spots. The wing span is about 2 5/8 to 3 7/8 inches.
The caterpillar eats milkweed which is toxic, thus making the butterfly also toxic to birds.
