After the martyrdom of Joseph Smith, the Latter Day Saints were led from Nauvoo to the site of modern day Salt Lake City, by Brigham Young. In about 1861 Brigham Young sent members of the LDS churh into Southern Utah and Northern Arizona to colonize the area. One of the more remote areas were near the vermilion cliffs in both Southern Utah and Northern Arizona that are known today as simply, the Vermilion Cliffs. The Cliffs on this page are in Arizona. There are beautiful reddish or vermilion colored cliffs in both Southern Utah and Northern Arizona that are known as the Vermilion Cliffs. The cliffs displayed on this page are in northern Arizona. You can turn off highway 89A at the Navajo Bridge and visit Lee's Ferry Crossing. Keep on highway 89A further west and you will be in Jacob's Lake near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Or go on further to the north and west and you can visit Pipe Springs, or Kanab, or maybe St. George. If you are planning to visit the Vermilion Cliffs and you are coming from outside of Arizona, you could fly into Saint George, Utah or Page, Arizona and then rent a car. Some people come up from Flagstaff, Arizona and stay overnight in Jacob's Lake, Arizona. There are several options. There are hotels and motels all along the way in the nearby towns. We have some links to expedia.com on this page since they can arrange all of your air flights, hotels and car. You may need some outdoor clothing and equipment, if you plan to visit the Vermilion Cliffs. We have some links to Altrec on this page since they are a good online source for outdoor gear.
