Trixis
Trixis californica, Aster or Sunflower Family ( Asteraceae ) also known as the Composite Family: ( Compositae ), Trixis: Also Called: American Threefold, California Trixis.
Trixis californica is an evergreen sub-shrub to shrub, up to 3 1/2 feet tall and 1 to 3 feet wide; bright green. It has lanceolate rigid leaves, 2 inches long and 1/2 inches wide.
Trixis has yellow, two-lipped flowers. The outer lip is 3-toothed, the inner lip 3-cleft.
It is native to the USA (California to Texas), and northern Mexico, at elevations from 800 to 5000 feet.
It needs little water when established, it is very drought tolerant, it needs good drainage.
Height: Up To 3 feet tall.
Flowers: 1 1/2 - inch, golden-yellow two-lipped, the outer lip 3-toothed, the inner lip 3-cleft; achene densely hispidulous, subrostrate, pappus of numerous straw-colored bristles.
Blooming Time: February to October but depending on winter conditions, it can flower almost year - round.
Leaves: Dark - green, alternate, lanceolate, slightly toothed (or smooth-edged), densely sessile-glandular beneath leaves grow to 2 inches long 1/2 inch wide. Very short hairs. Foul odor when crushed.
Found: Southwestern United States in the states of California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas; also in regions northwestern Mexico.
Elevation: 0 to 3,281 feet in California. Northern Mexico, at 2,000 to 5,000 feet.
Habitat: Dry rocky slopes, washes, desert flats, and canyons.
