Tipu
Tipuana tipu, Faboideae / Leguminosae / Papilionaceae Family ( Papilionaceae ), Tipu. Also Called: Rosewood, Pride-of-Bolivia, Yellow Jacaranda, Racehorse Tree, Mtipia.
Tipu is a semi-deciduous and widely-crowned tree with a flattened canopy. It has beautiful pea like orange flowers in the spring.
Height: About 30 - 50 feet. Same spread. Can reach 100 feet. Same spread.
Flowers: Orange - yellow, pea-like flowers, 3/4" across.
Blooming Time: May to July.
Stems/Trunks : Red-brown; the trunk becomes fissured and flaking with age, the bark on the branches is gray and cracked, sap from the cut branches is red and sticky.
Leaves: The leaves are Alternate, bipinnately compound, 1 to 2 inches long, usually with only two major leaflets (may occasionally have 2 to 3 pairs),
each leaflet has 6 to 9 pairs of narrow minor leafletsabout 1/2 to 1 inch long. They have entire margins with a fuzzy surface, green, to gray-green above, slightly paler below.
Seed Pod: A light brown or tan tightly coiled legume, 1 to 2 inches long, ripening in the middle to late summer.
Elevation: 0 - 3,600 Feet.
Habitat: The mountain forests of Southern Bolivia, northern Argentina, southern Brazil, Uruguay, & Paraguay. Landscaping, Sandy Loam to Clay Loam.
