Spreadfruit Goldenbanner Thermopsis pinetorum, Papilionaceae Family also the Bean Family ( Fabaceae ) and Pea Family (Leguminosae), Spreadfruit Goldenbanner. Also Called: Thermopsis divaricarpa, Thermopsis montana var. divaricarpa, Thermopsis rhombifolia var. divaricarpa, Pine Goldenpea, Goldenpea, Big Golden Pea. Thermopsis pinetorum is a perennial , shrub, forb/herb and it is a common resident of the upper elevation Ponderosa Pine forests. There is only one species in Arizona. It blooms in the early spring as an erect long flower spike. The blossoms are bright yellow. Height: About 6 - 16 inches. Spreading out to about 26 inches wide. Flowers: Older flowers are yellow color, in clusters of 1 - 3, younger flowers are tinged red or orange and a orange red backed banner petal. Blooming Time: April to June. Leaves: Leaves are pinnately compound, with 4 - 5 leaflets, each up to 1/4 inches long, grayish green. Elevation: 6,000-9,500 Feet. Habitat: Near water or low spots where water gathers.
