The Inveraray Jail is one of Scotland's most exciting heritage attractions which visitors can explore at their leisure. They can even take part in the activities there by joining into such activities such as facing the judge, joining the jury, hearing the verdict, meeting the prison staff, and socializing with the prisoners. Inveraray Jail opened as a tourist attraction in 1989 where you can visit the magnificently restored 1820 Courtroom where you can sit and listen to excerpts from trials of the past. Then you can pass on to the prisons below, and meet with our Warders, the Matron, and the Prisoners in period costumes. Here you will see the airing yards, furnished cells and experience the prison sounds and smells. Ask the 'Prisoner' how to pick Oakum. Turn the handle of an original crank machine, take 40 winks in a hammock or listen to Matron's tales of daily life as she keeps one eye on the nursing mother, barefoot thieves and the lunatic in her care. See imaginative exhibitions including: 'Torture, Death and Damnation'. Steve Edwards went there and we took his pictures.
