The Painted Desert & the Petrified Forest are found in one National Park known as the Petrified Forest National Park.

The Puerco Pueblo is found in the Petrified Forest National Park on the Petrified Forest road, south of the I - 40. The Petrified Forest road runs beneath I - 40 and can only be reached by entering the Petrified Forest National Park.

A Google Earth Map search marks the center of the Puerco Pueblo Ruins Parking Lot at about: 34o 58' 34.74" N 109o 47' 38.07" W. At about 5,354 feet elevation.

The Puerco Pueblo Ruins were inhabited between 1,250 and 1,380 AD and they make up the largest known archeological site within the park.

Puerco Pueblo was first excavated by John Muir in 1905 and 1906.

The partially excavated ruins are only a small part of the original 100-room complex that surrounded a large plaza. It is thought that perhaps only 18 families lived there during its peak.

The Anasazi / Hopi peoples lived to the north of Puerco Pueblo, and the Mogollon / Zuni people lived to the south. Artifacts found at Puerco Pueblo indicate that there was interaction between the Anasazi / Hopi and the Mogollon / Zuni, with the people at Puerco Pueblo.

The people who lived at Puerco Pueblo were farmer/gatherers, planting their crops in the Puerco River floodplain.

The few ruins at Puerco Pueblo are interesting, but the numerous nearby petroglyphs are very interesting to view.

Numerous hunting scenes with animals are etched into the dark nearby rocks.

The petroglyphs include human faces, bighorn sheep, antelope, birds, snakes, and lizards.

Three rectangular Kivas have been partially excavated and can be seen at the site.

Some even more impressive petroglyphs can be seen at nearby Newspaper Rock.
