Arizona Poppy
Kallstroemia grandiflora, Bean - Caper or Caltrop Family: ( Zygophyllaceae ), Arizona Poppy: Also called: Arizona Caltrop, Orange Caltrop, Summer Poppy, Vaivurín, Mal de Ojo, Sore Eye.

Arizona Poppy blooms in the late summer to fall and has five flower petals. It especially blooms in the summer after the summer rains. It is often confused with Mexican Gold Poppy (Eschscholtzia mexicana), which blooms in the spring and has four petals.

Arizona Poppy flowers are over an inch across with 5 petals. In the early morning they open and have a bright orange color with darker striations, then fade to a pale orange with the afternoon heat.

This summer annual grows from nearly prostrate to about 3 feet across with sparse divided foliage. When young it could be confused with goat heads folaige.

Arizona Poppy flowers have no fragrance, but they are visited by at least 46 different species of insects, including bees, wasps, butterflies, and flies.

Height: Up To 1 to 2 feet tall. In large groups they can be 3 feet tall.
Flowers: Five petal, 2.5 inches wide, yellow or yellow-orange, with a orange to reddish center.
Blooming Time: August to November.
Leaves: Pinnately compound, opposite, up to 2.5" long. Its stems and leaves are hairy.
Found: Native to northern Arizona to Texas and south to Colima, Mexico. Also found in Baja, Mexico.
Elevation: 0 - 6,000 Feet.
Habitat: Sandy desert soils, hot, sunny areas, good drainage, to 6,000 feet'.
Miscellaneous: Flowering Photos Taken Near Safford, Arizona On August 25, 2008. Great xeriscape plant. On August 28, 2008; we also found it growing on the roadway at Congress Junction, Arizona.
