Wholeleaf Indian Paintbrush
Castilleja integra, Figwort Family: ( Scrophulariaceae ), Wholeleaf Indian Paintbrush. Also called: Southwestern Paintbrush.

A short lived perennial plant, fast growing to 2 - 3 feet tall. Generally about 18 inches tall. A partial root parasite.

There are over 12 species of this plant in Arizona and they are very difficult to identify.

The leaves of this plant were known in Mexico by the Zapotec's as Hierba de Conejo and were used in the cooking of beans and rice. Used fresh or dry.

Height: Perennial growing to about 2 - 3 feet tall.
Flowers: The flowers are red to red - orange with lobed, hairy, in terminal clusters, with narrow bracts.
Blooming Time: March - August.
Leaves: The leaves are red - green, hairy, 2 inches long, linear - lanceolate.
Found: Found throughout higher elevations in Arizona.
Elevation: 4,500 – 9,500 feet.
Habitat: Dry hills, woodlands, mesas, plains, high prairies, on gravelly or rocky soil.
