Mormon Lake: Elevation about 7,110 feet.

Mormon Lake is the largest natural lake in Arizona; however during dry periods the lake can become smaller and even dry up. The name of the lake commemorates the early Mormon settlers who arrived here in the 1870's and founded several dairy farms in the area. None of the farms exist any longer.

A Google Earth Map search marks the center of Mormon Lake at about 34o 56' 22.66" N 111o 27' 25.70" W.

Mormon Lake, has fishing, boating, picnicking, hiking, camping (both developed and primitive), windsurfing, wildlife watching, biking, & photography.

On the lake's western shore there is a amall resort where you can rent various recreational equipment; such as mountain bikes, horses, snowmobiles, and cross-country skis during winter season. They also have a country store and service station.

Also, there is the Mormon Lake Lodge, a well known cowboy steak house, where the brands of the local ranches are burned into its log walls.

There are two developed campgrounds nearby, scattered among the cool, picturesque groves of ponderosa pines and white firs. They are the Dairy Springs and Double Springs Campgrounds. They are normally open from May 1st to October 15, 2009 (weather permitting). Tents and small motor homes up to 35' are permitted at both campgrounds.

Dairy Springs Campground has 30 single-unit sites with tables and cooking grills. It also has two group sites available (1 - 40 people). Drinking water, Toilets (vault type), self-guided nature trail, & a campfire program amphitheater.

Double Springs Campground has 15 single-unit sites on a "First-come, first-served" basis.

If you like hiking; three hiking trails originate at Dairy Springs Campground, and one at Double Springs Campground.

Wildlife watching is also plentiful in this area. You should see hawks, including the northern harriers and ospreys. You should also see elk and mule deer.

To Get There: From Flagstaff:

Drive south from Flagstaff 25 miles on Forest Highway 3 (Lake Mary Road) to the Forest Road 90 intersection. Turn west on FR 90 and about 3.5 miles to Dairy Springs Campground, or about 4 miles to the lake, or 4.6 miles to Double Springs Campground.
