Los Algodones (al-go-DOAN-es), or Vicente Guerrero is a town in Baja California, Mexico, approximately 16 km (9.9 mi) west of Yuma, Arizona. The northernmost town in Mexico, Los Algodones has the distinction that a person traveling from it in any of the four cardinal directions would reach a border with the US.

Most tourists enter Los Algodones through the Andrade, California, border crossing.

Los Algodones has a large number of curio stores, which sell a large variety of artesanias (handicrafts, leather art, handmade flowers, clothes) brought from the deeper central and southern states of Mexico. Local dishes commonly available in restaurants include many types of antojitos (Mexican food) such as enchiladas, tacos, burritos with carne machaca (dried meat), menudo and tamales.

Because of its proximity to Yuma, Arizona, & California; Los Algodones has become a large provider of medical and dental care in Mexico for patients from the U.S., with care that is comparable in professionalism, equipment, and competency at prices that are 40% to 60% cheaper than in the USA.

So much dental work is done in Los Algodones that it's nick name is "Molar City."

Our last visit to Los Algodones was on January 19, 2016.

We highly recommend the Hacienda Los Algodones as your hotel if staying overnight in Los Algodones. It is also highly recommended by TripAdvisor.com. Priceline.com can make your reservation for you. Please use the Priceline link on this page. The hotels price is about $60 to $80 a night.

IMPORTANT NOTE: A passport or other WHTI-compliant travel document is necessary for U.S. and Canadian citizens traveling to Mexico. You may not be asked to present your passport if entering Mexico by land, but you will surely need to present one upon your return to the United States.

Unless you have Mexican Auto Insurance, do not drive into Mexico.

Shopping in Mexico is really fun! They have many hand-crafted items that are not available in the US. You buy handmade crafts, jewelry, leather goods, art, decor, pottery, basketry, rugs, paintings and even furniture for about half of the perceived value.

Unlike the US where customers pay the price marked on the item, in Mexico shopping is a game about bargaining. You ask "how much" and they give you the "list price" which seems to differ at every marketplace. You will offer a price that is less than half of the asking price, and the vendor will then make a counter-offer. After the bargaining has run its course, you end up paying about half-price.

We take dollars, which they accept. But we keep your dollars secure. We keep less than $20 where we can access it easily, if we need to. That way pickpockets won't get too much. But, pickpockets are not much of aproblem in Los Algodones.

Not all places will take credit cards or checks.

There are also Mexican pharmacies where you can purchase prescription drugs at substantially less cost than in the US.

Be sure you have a valid prescription from you regular doctor specifically written for your usage. You may be asked for that information.

Very few pharmacies sell name brand drugs in Mexico. KNOW THE GENERIC NAME OF YOUR DRUG.

Also be sure to ask the pharmacist about the legalities of buying prescriptions in Mexico. Note: In many cases prescriptions are not required to buy, but officials may want to see them when coming back into the US.

Many Americans go Los Algodones to see dentists and get dental work since dental services are also less expensive in Mexico. If you know someone who has used Los Algodones dentists, ask them for recommendations.

Crossing The Border Into Los Algodones:

Unless you are traveling deeper into Mexico, it is best to park your vehicle on the American side of the border. Fees are nominal and the border crossing is close to parking areas. Remember you must have Mexican auto insurance in Mexico and by parking on the US side of the border, you won't have to worry about buying the separate insurance.

If you plan to make your visit any longer than 72 hours, you will need to procure a “tarjeta de turista,” known in the U.S. as a Mexican government tourist card. Remember that now a valid passport is required to re-enter the USA.

There are hotels and motels all along the way in nearby towns.

We have some links to Priceline.com on this page since they can arrange all of your air flights, hotels and car.

We personally use the Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Yuma. They have free breakfast. Use our IHG Links to contact Holiday Inn Express & Suites in Yuma. No Obligation.
