Antigua Guatemala, a city in the central highlands of Guatemala, was founded on March 10, 1543, by Spanish conquistadors, as the capital of the Kingdom of Guatemala; (the area that is now Guatemala, Belize, Chiapas, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua ). The Spanish conquistadors named it Santiago de los Caballeros. La Antigua Guatemala means the "Old Guatemala". Then Antigua was severely damaged by an earthquake in 1773. The capital of Guatemala was subsequently moved to present-day Guatemala City and Antigua was almost abandoned. Today, La Antigua Guatemala (commonly referred to as just Antigua or La Antigua) is famous for its well-preserved Spanish Mudéjar-influenced, Baroque architecture as well as for a number of spectacular ruins of colonial Spanish churches. These many historic edifices qualifed it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979. Since it is one of the oldest and best-preserved Latin American cities, its church ruins and immaculate New Baroque-style Spanish architecture characterize this popular Guatemalan tourist stop. Antigua Guatemala, nestled in a valley surrounded by the peaks of three towering volcanoes. When you tour the city you will often see the volcanoes in the background. As you visit you can stroll Antigua's cobblestone streets and view the many places of interest dating from the mid-1500's. A must see tour is of the Cathedral of Santiago, the Church and Convent de Nuestra Señora de la Merced, and the Church and Convent of Santo Domingo. The city center's Proyecto Cultural El Sitio, found at 5a Calle Poniente, offers arts and cultural exhibitions from theater events to music and dance events. You'll also find colonial-era artifacts, including portraits and statues at the Museum of Santiago (at City Hall). Further, you can visit the Museum of Colonial Art. Also, surrounded by City Hall, the Captain's Palace and the Metropolitan Cathedral, downtown Antigua's Central Park, or Plaza Mayor, is one of the finest plazas in all of Guatemala.
