Desert Hackberry
Celtis pallida, Elm Family: ( Ulmaceae ), Desert Hackberry. Also called: Celtis ehrenbergia, Spiny Hackberry, Acebuche, Capul, Garabata, Granjeno, Granjeno Blanco, Granjeno Huasteco, Granjenillo.
An evergreen shrub or small tree up to 16 feet tall.
Height: 10 - 16 feet tall and 8 - 10 feet wide.
Flowers: The flowers are tiny, hermaphrodite, green - yellow.
Blooming Time: April.
Leaves: 3/4 to 1 1/2 inches long, coarsely toothed on upper half of leaf, somewhat leathery, 3 veins come from the base.
Fruit: Ripens in October. Round 1/4 inch orange drupe, acid tasting. Most of fruit is seed.
Found: Found throughout southern Arizona, parts of southeastern New Mexico, southern Texas, Baja California and south to Oaxaca Mexico.
Elevation: 2,500 - 5,000 Feet. Will grow at lower elevations.
Habitat: Well drained soil is preferred.
