Pink Muhly Grass can grow 3 feet in height and spread over 6 feet wide. In the fall, its deep pink flowers covering the plant is especially beautiful when backlit by the sun. Muhlenbergia capillaris is a showy clump forming grass. The stems and leaves are wirelike and unbranched, originating from a dense basal clump. The purple - red or pink inflorescence is a diffuse, silky panicle, about 18 inches long and 10 inches wide. It stands out above the wiry leaves. It appears in the late summer, and persists for 6 - 8 weeks. The ripe seeds that follow the bloom give the plumes a tan color.

It tolerates alkaline soil; extremely drought tolerant. Moderate to little water, cannot tolerate poorly-drained soils. Hardy to 18 degrees F.

Inflorescence: Airy inflorescence often colored pink, purplish red, purplish gray; drys to a light buff tan.
Height: Height normally about 36 inches tall. Will also spread to about 48 inches. Can be 5 feet high with a 6 foot spread.
Blooming Time: Late September - November.
Leaves: Simple, gray - green; medium blade width.
Elevation: 0 - 4,000 Feet.
Habitat: Well drained soil does well in hot dry sandy sites; very drought tolerant. A Xeriscape Landscape plant. Native of east Texas.
