Cholula: The Pyramid of Cholula or more correctly called, "The Pyramid of Tipanipa." Also known as, "Mexico's Largest Pyramid!" It actually is the largest "Single Base Pyramid" in the world! We have been to Cholula on two different occasions. First in December of 1982 and again on January 17, 2004. It is amazing to see how the population of Mexico City has grown clear out to the edges of Puebla and how the City of Puebla has grown up around the city of Cholula and the Pyramid Of Cholula. Our pages two main web pages about Cholula show what Cholula was like in 1982 and we will show some of the changes that have taken place with photos of January of 2004. We also will include the Cholula Museum on our museum page, which we did not see in 1982. The major difference that we have noticed between 1882 and 2004 is that the effects of high pollution and acid rain are having a detrimental effect upon the soft stone altars. of course, the volcano Popocateepetl has erupted several times since our first visit in 1982 and these eruptions have scattered ash over Cholula which has contribued to the destruction of the softer rock monuments and freizes by acids resulting from the eruptions and high moisture content of the air near Puebla and Cholula. We also noticed a lot of breakage has occured to the freizes and monuments of Cholula and some very shoddy repair work has been attempted by INAH to repair these monuments. In some cases it appears that INAH is doing next to nothing to preserve the site. We suspect that it is due a lack of funding from the government in power at this time. The site is not well marked and the signs that are there are not very descriptive. When it come to the tunnel, there is almost no descriptive signage within the tunnel system, so it is almost impossible to know what you are seeing as you tour the tunnels. We did notice that much more of the underground system is available for viewing now than in 1982. We will place many photos of the tunnel system on this page, but we cannot give a good description of what we saw inside the tunnel system.
