Chicanna, Campeche: To enter the Mayan ruin of Chicanna it was necessary to enter the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve.Mexico is host to approximately 10% of all plant and animal species in the world. Unfortunately, hundreds of species are added to the endangered species lists because of man-made threats. With more than 1,700,000 acres, the Calakmul Biosphere Reserve is the second largest protected area in Mexico. It is among the few remaining areas in the American Continent where jaguars still roam. While traveling through part of the reserve we say many different animals and plants. We will enclose a few pictures of the wildlife that we saw. Chicanná means "Serpent-mouth House" in Mayan. Chicanná was discovered and named by Jack D. Eaton in 1966 during reconnaissance of the area prior to the formal start of the National Geographic/Tulane University archaeological study centered at Becán. The ancient name of Chicanná is not known. Chicanná and its close neighbor, Becán, were built during the same time period (about A.D. 600 to 830).
