Chalcatzingo Archaeological Ruins:

At this site we found the sacred Amate tree which is used to produce paper. This paper was made from the inner bark of the wild fig tree for making codices (Mesoamerican books). Huun is a Mayan word for paper and it also Huun is the name the sacred Amate tree used to make handmade paper since pre-Hispanic times.

This type of amate tree, popularly known as a “matapalo” (a stick killer), always surrounds the closest tree to it in what at first seems to be a loving or, at least, protective embrace, but later turns out to be a form of asphyxiation.

Here at Chalcatzingo, the amate trees ( Ficus tecolutensis )which grow attached to the cliffs and exhibit a great flexibility are integral parts of the "sacred landscape".
