Chacchoben, Quintana Roo: Chacchoben in Mayan means "the Place of Red Corn", in Spanish you would say "Lugar de Maiz Colorado".

The Chacchoben archeological site is located about 3 km north-west of Lazaro Cardenas (directly on Hwy 293 to Merida, on the west side of the road, not in the village of Chacchoben for which the site is named. The Chacchoben archeological site GPS coordinates at the site entrance are: 19°2.978' N, 88°10.470' W. The back side of Temple One can be seen on the west side of Hwy 293 before entering the site if you are traveling from the South. See map of Chacchoben below.

When you arrive at the site entrance, Edificio 24 at the West Side of Plaza B is the first structure that you see. Even more impressive temples lay behind Edificio 24 in the Gran Basamento; the tallest one being Temple 1. As you walk through the ruins you will be surrounded by towering mahogany trees, enormous cohune palms, strangler figs and the hanging tentacles of banyan trees.

We had this beautiful site pretty much to ourselves on the day of our visit and as we were leaving the only visitors we met were a retired couple who had driven to Chacchoben from Utah. They had driven down to purchase a second home at Cancun and were touring the area.

We visited Chacchoben on February 6, 2004 at about 12:00 Noon.
