We think that San Lorenzo was the first Olmec population center. By about 900 BC, San Lorenzo was almost abandoned. Then La Venta rose to prominence and became the most prominent Olmec center, lasting from about 900 BC until its abandonment around in about 400 BC. Some of the items from those sites are shown on this page.
