The Yad Vashem, Or Holocaust Memorial in Jerusalem, Israel is the Jewish people’s memorial to the murdered Six Million people and it symbolizes the ongoing confrontation about the Holocaust. It contains the world’s largest repository of information about the Holocaust. The Holocaust Memorial was established in 1953 by act of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) to commemorate the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators during the years 1933-1945. The Holocaust Memorial is located on Har Hazikaron (Heb., Hill of Remembrance), a ridge on the western outskirts of Jerusalem. It has several commemorative monuments, an historical museum, a central archive and a research center concerning the Holocaust. Sights to see are the Hall of Remembrance (Ohel Yizkor), the underground Children’s Memorial, the Valley of the Communities, the Memorial to the Deportees, and the Holocaust History Museum. The Holocaust Memorial contains the Yad Vashem Archive collection, which comprises 55 million pages of documents, nearly 100,000 photographs, film footage and the videotaped testimonies of survivors. The task of Yad Vashem is to perpetuate the memory and lessons of the Holocaust for future generations. The Yad Vashem International School for Holocaust Studies each year holds courses for over 100,000 students, 50,000 soldiers and thousands of educators.
