Left of the Tomb of the Virgin in Jerusalem is a passage leading to the Grotto of the Agony, then immediately south is the Garden of Gethsemane with its eight ancient olive-trees.

The Mount of Olives: also known as, Mount Olivet, or Har HaZeitim; or in Arabic as Jebel ez-Zeitun, Jebel et-Tur, or the "Mount of the Summit"; is a mountain ridge to the east of Jerusalem. It is named such because of the olive trees with which its sides are covered. At the foot of the mountain is the Gardens of Gethsemane where Jesus stayed in Jerusalem, according to tradition. The Mount of Olives is the site of many important Biblical events.

Also, in the Book of Zechariah; the Mount of Olives is identified as the place from which God will begin to redeem the dead at the latter days. For this reason, Jews have always sought to be buried on the Mount of Olives. From Biblical times to the present day the Mount of Olives has been used as a cemetery for the Jews of Jerusalem. There are about 150,000 graves on the Mount of Olives, including those of many famous people. Just a few of these include the tomb of Zechariah, who prophesied there.

The Garden of Gethsemane, at the foot of the Mount of Olives. On the night of His betrayal our Lord left the city of Jerusalem and crossed through the Kidron Valley and into the Garden of Gethsemane (Matt. 26:36; John 18:1). This was a favorite spot of Jesus and where he spent his last night.

The name "Gethsemane" is derived from the Hebrew words "Gat", which means "a place for pressing" and "Shemanim", which means "oils." the Garden of Gethsemane was where olives from the Mount of Olives were pressed into oil. After the Last Supper, Jesus came to this garden with his disciples to pray and to let himself be arrested (John 18:2-12), thus setting in motion the events that led to his crucifixion the next day.

There are eight olive trees in this garden that may be at least 2,000 - 3,000 years old. They still bear fruit. If they are not the actual trees in the area where Jesus prayed, then they could have been young saplings when Jesus came here with the disciples on that night after the Last Supper (Matt. 26:36; Mark 14:32; John 18:1).

One of the most easily recognizable landmarks of Jerusalem, on the slope of the Mount of Olives in the Garden of Gethsemane, is the Church Of Saint Mary Magdalene. It was built in the Russian Muscovite style with golden onion domes or cupolas.

The Church Of All Nations, built in the 1920s over some earlier churches, tells the events of the Garden of Gethsemane in bright detailed mosaics: ie. Jesus praying alone (Mark 14:35-36); Judas’ betrayal of Jesus (Matt. 26:48); the cutting off of the ear of the High Priest’s servant (Mark 14:47).

It is thought that the Golden Gate will be where Jesus will enter when he returns. It is probable that when Jesus entered Jerusalem on "Palm Sunday"; He went through this gate (Matt. 21:1-11). The Golden Gate or "Gate of Mercy" was sealed many years ago by the Turks.

The Garden Of Gethsemane is located at the bottom of the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem. To get there, you exit Jerusalem via Stephen's Gate, then walk down to and across the Kidron Valley. If coming by taxi and visiting the Mount of Olives as well, getting off at the top of the Mount and walking down to Gethsemane will be much easier on you.
