The Sea Of Galilee or Lake Kinneret, is Israel's largest freshwater lake. It is Israels' largest freshwater lake. The Sea Of Galilie is about 33 miles in circumference, it is about 13 miles long, and about 8 miles wide. The Hebrew name of Lake Kinneret comes from the Hebrew word for harp, kinnor, refering to its harp like shape.

The Sea of Galilee has been known under a number of different names, including: Lake Kinneret, The Sea Of Chinnereth, Lake Of Gennesaret, Lake Of Tarichaeae, or The Sea Of Tiberias.

The Sea Of Galilee is located in the Great Jordan Rift Valley. It is mainly fed by the River Jordan. Being in the Rift Valley, it is subject to many earthquakes.

Also, due to its low - lying position in the rift valley, it is subject to sudden violent storms; leading to the New Testament story about Jesus calming the raging storm. As noted in New Testament times, it still contains abundant supplies of fish..

The main cities surrounding the Sea Of Galilee include Bethsaida, Capernaum, Tiberias, and Hippos.

The land around the Sea Of Galilee is characterized by abundant water and rich soil, making it a good location for agriculture. Fishing has always been a major industry.

Legend says that Solomon rewarded Hiram for services by the gift of an upland plain among the mountains of Naphtali. This was Galilee. Hiram was displeased with the gift, and called it "The Land Of Cabul." The Jews called it Galil.

During the times of the Romans, the land was divided into Judea, Samaria, and Galilee, which was the entire Northern section of the country, and was the largest. Herod Antipas, the son of Herod the Great, ruled Galilee as the tetrarch during the ministry of Jesus.

Galilee has been the scene of some of the most memorable events of Jewish and Christian history. Galilee was the home of Jesus during about thirty years of his life. The first three Gospels of the New Testament are mainly concerning Jesus' ministry in this area, specifically in the two villages of Nazareth and Capernaum.
